Make Your Own: Oat Flour

White flour is slowly becoming an item of the past. It holds very little nutrition and has often been bleached and stripped of its good properties. With dozens of different options on the market today it’s hard to decide exactly which one is best for you, but why not try one you can make at home?

Enter oats.


We have used oat flour a couple times here recently. Once in our chocolate protein bites and another time with our oat flour cookies, but we used it often at home with pancakes as well.

What’s not to like?

  • Oats are low in sugar, but high in fiber and protein.
  • The vast majority of brands are gluten-free.
  • Very competitive price.


How to make your own oat flour.

The only things you need to make oat flour at home are rolled oats and either a food processor or blender, I’ve used both and had great success each way. Just add your oats to the machine of your choice and blend until it reaches a smooth consistency. It will be slightly grittier than traditional flour but this goes away when you put it into a recipe because oats are so good at absorbing moisture.

If you only plan on making enough oat flour for one recipe at a time, you’ll want to measure out a little more than you think you need. One cup of oats will blend down to just under one cup of oat flour, so measure with heaping cups instead of spot on.

Making things at home instead of buying them at the store is always really fulfilling to me, especially if they are made out of something as multipurpose as oats, then I don’t have to feel like a weirdo for stocking up on them.
